Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh), May 26: On the auspicious occasion of Vat Savitri Puja 2025, hundreds of married women in Prayagraj gathered at Shri Maa Alok Shankari Temple on Sunday to observe the age-old ritual for their husbands’ long life, prosperity, and marital harmony. The temple, located in the heart of the city, saw a vibrant turnout of devotees participating in the traditional Vat Savitri Vrat, which holds deep significance in Hindu culture.

Vat Savitri Puja is primarily observed by married Hindu women across North India. Falling on Amavasya Tithi (new moon day), the ritual involves fasting, offering prayers, and performing puja around a banyan tree, which symbolizes immortality and strength. Women seek divine blessings for the longevity and well-being of their husbands, inspired by the legendary tale of Savitri and Satyavan.

Monika Tiwari, one of the devotees at the temple, shared, “I’m performing this Vat Savitri Vrat with full devotion, praying that just like the banyan tree is considered immortal, my husband’s life will be long and our bond strong. This fast is not just a ritual, it is our faith and prayer for love, protection, and happiness in marriage.”

Another woman added, “We have come here to worship and seek blessings just as Savitri did. This day connects us spiritually to our roots and the power of a devoted wife’s prayer.” The temple grounds were buzzing with spiritual energy as women in traditional attire circumambulated the banyan trees, tied sacred threads, and offered fruits, flowers, and holy water. Hymns and prayers filled the air, marking a day of deep devotion and cultural pride.

Rooted in the epic story from the Mahabharata, the Vat Savitri Puja honours Savitri’s unwavering faith and love, which brought her husband Satyavan back from the clutches of death. This puja is seen as a powerful testament to a wife's prayer and spiritual strength, promoting values of loyalty, love, and family well-being.

Even in today’s modern world, festivals like Vat Savitri continue to hold relevance. With each passing year, the participation of younger women in such rituals indicates a renewed interest in traditional customs and the importance of spiritual practices in sustaining relationships.
