What is Vat Purnima Vrat?

Vat Purnima, also known as Vat Savitri Vrat in some regions, is a traditional fast observed by married Hindu women. It is rooted in the legendary story of Savitri and Satyawan, where Savitri's devotion and wisdom compelled Lord Yama, the god of death, to restore her husband’s life. The festival is named after the "Vat" or Banyan tree, which symbolizes long life and steadfastness in marriage. Women worship this sacred tree and tie sacred threads around its trunk, praying for the health, longevity, and prosperity of their spouses.

Vat Purnima Vrat Puja Vidhi

  • Women wake up early, bathe, and wear traditional attire—often in red or yellow.
  • They observe a nirjala fast (without food and water) throughout the day.
  • The Banyan tree (Vat Vriksha) is worshipped with flowers, water, turmeric, kumkum, and sacred threads.
  • Women walk around the tree (parikrama) and tie threads around it while reciting Savitri Vrat Katha.
  • Devotional songs and mantras are chanted in praise of Goddess Savitri.
  • The fast is broken only after completing all rituals in the evening.
Vat Purnima Vrat Importance

The vrat celebrates faith, love, and the power of a devoted wife. By fasting and praying on this day, women not only seek blessings for their husband's long life but also cultivate inner strength, patience, and resilience—qualities embodied by Savitri. This sacred observance fosters a deeper connection between couples and reminds society of the timeless values of commitment and duty in marriage.

Vat Purnima Vrat 2025 is more than a ritual—it’s a celebration of enduring love and spiritual strength. On June 10, married women across India will observe this auspicious fast with unwavering devotion, upholding a cherished tradition passed down for generations.
