Vaikasi Visakam 2025: Devotees Flock to Abirami Amman Temple in Tamil Nadu for Special Prayers

DINDIGUL (Tamil Nadu), June 10 – Thousands of devotees gathered at the historic Abirami Amman Temple in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, to celebrate Vaikasi Visakam 2025, a highly significant festival in the Tamil Hindu calendar. The grand float festival featured the deities Lord Padmagiriswarar and Goddess Abirami Amman, who were carried in a sacred procession and placed on a beautifully decorated boat amidst chanting and prayers.

This auspicious day, which marks the birth star of Lord Murugan (also known as Kartikeya, Skanda, or Subrahmanya), drew large crowds seeking divine blessings. The Vaikasi Visakam festival, observed during the Tamil month of Vaikasi, is celebrated with immense devotion in Tamil Nadu and other parts of South India.

The celebrations began with traditional rituals performed by temple priests. The idols of Lord Padmagiriswarar and Goddess Abirami Amman were taken out in a grand procession and then placed on a vibrantly lit float. Devotees watched in awe as the boat glided across the temple tank, offering prayers and seeking darshan. This float festival is a highlight of Vaikasi Visakam, drawing pilgrims from various parts of Tamil Nadu.

Simultaneously, major Lord Murugan temples across Tamil Nadu, including those in Madurai, saw massive gatherings. Devotees participated in abhishekams (holy baths), alankaram (decorations), and special poojas. Murugan’s idol was paraded in ornately decorated chariots amid devotional music and chants. Many worshippers undertook kavadi offerings, observed fasts, and participated in cultural programs and devotional singing, marking their devotion and spiritual commitment.

According to Hindu scriptures, Vaikasi Visakam is of great spiritual importance, especially for followers of Lord Murugan. It is believed that Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, was born on this star to vanquish the demon Tarkasura. He is revered as a protector of dharma and a divine warrior who answers the prayers of sincere devotees. Murugan is often depicted with six faces and riding a peacock, symbolising strength, knowledge, and victory over evil.

The Vaikasi Visakam festival began on May 31 and spans ten days. Each day includes different spiritual and cultural activities, processions, and community gatherings. Devotees wear traditional attire, take part in temple rituals, and engage in acts of service and devotion. The event not only reinforces spiritual values but also brings together communities in a celebration of faith and culture.

Vaikasi Visakam 2025 brought vibrant celebrations and deep devotion to Tamil Nadu, especially at the Abirami Amman Temple. With rituals, floats, processions, and prayers, the festival continues to highlight the spiritual essence and cultural richness of South Indian Hindu traditions. As devotees return home with hearts full of blessings, the message of Lord Murugan’s grace and protection remains central to this sacred festival.
