The Tirumala Srivari Pavitrotsavam 2025, one of the most spiritually significant events at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), will begin on 3rd August 2025 (Sunday) and conclude on 5th August 2025 (Tuesday). This sacred Telugu festival is also known as the “Festival of Purification” and is dedicated to Lord Sri Venkateswara Swamy. Celebrated on Ekadashi, Dwadashi, and Trayodashi during the Shravan month, it involves a series of holy rituals intended to cleanse and renew the spiritual energy of the temple.
Initiated in 1463 AD by Saluva Mallaya Deva Raja, under the reign of Saluva Narasimha, this ancient tradition continues to uphold its original essence and importance even today.
Tirumala Srivari Pavitrotsavam 2025 Start and End Dates
Start Date: 3rd August 2025 (Sunday)
End Date: 5th August 2025 (Tuesday)
Significance of Tirumala Srivari Pavitrotsavam
The Srivari Pavitrotsavam starts with a preparatory ritual called Ankurarpanam, performed a day earlier. During this, nine types of sacred grains are sown in earthen pots to signify new spiritual beginnings. The main purpose of the festival is to seek forgiveness from the deity for any mistakes made during temple rituals throughout the year.
Priests acknowledge human error in daily worship and offer their prayers to restore purity and divine harmony. This symbolic act reflects the humility and deep devotion of the temple priests, as they strive to maintain the sacredness of Tirumala Temple traditions.
Rituals Performed During Pavitrotsavam
Day 1: Homam, Thirumanjanam and Procession
The festival opens with a Homam (sacred fire ritual) in the temple’s Yajnasala. This is followed by Snepana Thirumanjanam, a ritual bathing of the deity with milk, honey, turmeric, curd, and sandalwood. In the evening, Lord Malayappa Swamy is taken out in a grand Ananda Yatra across the four Mada streets. Devotees gather in large numbers to witness this divine procession.
Day 2: Worship of Pavitralu (Sacred Threads)
The second day also includes Thirumanjanam, followed by a unique ritual where sacred silk threads called Pavitralu are worshipped. These threads, dyed in five symbolic colours like red, blue, black, yellow, and green are tied to the deity's head, neck, and waist, and also to other deities in the temple. Made from cotton grown amidst Tulsi plants, these threads symbolize spiritual purification and the divine bond between God and devotees.
Day 3: Poornahuti and Conclusion
The final day includes another Homam, Thirumanjanam, and a concluding Poornahuti ritual, where offerings are made to mark the end of the ceremonies. The last procession of the festival again circles the Mada streets, leaving devotees filled with divine bliss and renewed spiritual energy.
