Sant Surdas was born in 1478 C.E., with most historians placing his birthplace in Sihi village, Faridabad, Haryana. Some traditions, however, believe he was born in Runkta near Agra. Blind from birth, Surdas faced neglect from his family and society at large. But his deep spiritual inclination led him to leave home at just six years old and devote himself to Lord Krishna, singing His praises from a very young age.
Life and Devotion
Despite his blindness, Surdas' inner vision and divine inspiration turned him into one of the most prominent voices of Bhakti (devotional) movement. His compositions, known for their spiritual depth and poetic beauty, earned him fame across the land. His reputation grew to such an extent that Mughal emperor Akbar became one of his patrons.
Surdas spent his later years in Braj, a region closely associated with the life of Lord Krishna. He survived on donations and dedicated his days to singing bhajans (devotional songs) and offering spiritual discourses.
Literary Contributions
Surdas is best known for his epic work, the Sur Sagar (Ocean of Melody), a collection of devotional songs primarily focused on the childhood and youth of Lord Krishna. Though it is said that he composed over 100,000 verses, only around 8,000 have survived over time. His poetry continues to be sung in temples and spiritual gatherings even today, touching the hearts of millions.
Significance of Surdas Jayanti
Surdas Jayanti is not just a celebration of a birth anniversary—it is a tribute to the power of devotion, resilience, and divine inspiration. Devotees observe this day by singing bhajans, reading his compositions, and reflecting on his life’s message of surrender to the divine.
As we commemorate Surdas Jayanti 2025, let us remember a soul who, despite physical blindness, illuminated the spiritual path for generations to come with his timeless devotion to Lord Krishna.
