The holy month of Shravan (Sawan) is one of the most auspicious periods in the Hindu calendar, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Devotees observe Sawan Somwar Vrat (Monday fasts) throughout this month to seek His blessings for prosperity, happiness, and spiritual growth. These Mondays, known as Shravan Somwars, are considered highly sacred for worshipping Mahadev through fasting, chanting, and offering prayers.
In 2025, the Second Sawan Somwar will be observed on Monday, July 21, 2025. On this day, devotees wake up early, visit Shiva temples, offer water and milk to the Shivling, and chant Shiva mantras for divine grace.
Significance of Sawan Somwar
The month of Sawan is regarded as highly sacred because it is believed that worshipping Lord Shiva during Shravan pleases Him quickly. Observing fasts on Shravan Mondays is believed to fulfill wishes, bring marital harmony, and wash away past sins. Many devotees also begin the Solah Somwar Vrat (16 Mondays fasting) starting from the first Monday of Sawan.
In North India, Shravan is widely celebrated as Sawan month, while in South India, it is observed as Shravan Masa. There is a 15-day difference in the starting date of Shravan depending on the lunar calendar followed (Purnimanta in North India vs. Amanta in South India).
