Sakat Chauth: Significance

Sakat Chauth holds immense spiritual and cultural importance. It is believed that observing this day with devotion brings happiness, prosperity, and good health to the family. The day is named after Goddess Sakat, symbolising compassion and protection. The tradition of fasting and worshipping on this day is deeply rooted in Hindu culture, showcasing the dedication of mothers toward their children’s welfare.

Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, is also worshipped on this day. His blessings are sought for overcoming challenges and ensuring success in life. Sakat Chauth is also known by other names, such as Sankat Chauth, Til-Kuta Chauth, Vakra-Tundi Chaturthi, and Maghi Chauth.

Sakat Chauth: Rituals
  • Fasting: Mothers observe a strict fast on this day, refraining from consuming food or water until they sight the moon at night. The fast is dedicated to the well-being of their sons and the overall prosperity of the family.
  • Til-Kuta Offering: Sesame seeds (til) play a significant role in the rituals. Special delicacies made from sesame, such as til ladoos and tilkut, are prepared and offered to the deities.
  • Worshipping Goddess Sakat and Lord Ganesha: Devotees set up a small altar with idols or images of Goddess Sakat and Lord Ganesha. The deities are worshipped with offerings of til, jaggery, fruits, and flowers. Special prayers are recited to seek blessings.
  • Moon Worship: After moonrise, women offer arghya (water mixed with milk) to the moon while praying for their children’s health and success. The fast is then broken with prasad.
  • Vrat Katha: Listening to or narrating the Sakat Chauth Vrat Katha is an integral part of the rituals. The story highlights the compassionate nature of Goddess Sakat and her blessings upon devotees.
Sakat Village and Temple

The origins of Sakat Chauth are closely linked to Sakat village in Rajasthan. This village is home to a famous temple dedicated to Goddess Sankat, also known as Sankat Chauth Mata. Located approximately 60 km from Alwar and 150 km from Jaipur, this temple attracts devotees seeking the blessings of Goddess Sakat.

Sakat Chauth is a festival of devotion, discipline, and divine blessings. It is a day when families come together to celebrate the love and dedication of mothers toward their children. Worshipping Goddess Sakat and Lord Ganesha on this auspicious day is believed to remove obstacles, bring prosperity, and ensure the well-being of loved ones.

As you prepare to observe Sakat Chauth on January 17, 2025, embrace the spirit of faith and devotion, and let the blessings of Goddess Sakat and Lord Ganesha guide you toward a life of happiness and fulfillment.
