Narasimha Jayanti, an important Hindu festival, will be observed this year on Sunday, May 11, 2025. The day marks the appearance of Lord Narasimha, the fierce half-lion, half-man incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who emerged to destroy the demon king Hiranyakashipu and protect his devotee Prahlada. This sacred occasion falls on Vaishakha Shukla Chaturdashi, the 14th day of the bright fortnight in the Hindu month of Vaishakha.

Narasimha Jayanti Significance

Lord Narasimha is revered for his strength and divine protection. His appearance signifies the triumph of devotion and righteousness over tyranny and evil. On this day, devotees remember his powerful avatar and seek his blessings for courage and protection.

When Vaishakha Shukla Chaturdashi coincides with Swati Nakshatra and a Saturday, the day becomes especially auspicious for performing the Narasimha Jayanti Vratam (fast and puja).

Narasimha Jayanti: Fasting and Rituals

The fasting rules of Narasimha Jayanti are similar to Ekadashi fasting. Devotees begin their observances by eating only one meal the day before the festival. On the day of Narasimha Jayanti, grains and cereals are strictly avoided.

  1. Sankalp (Vow): It is taken during the Madhyahna period (afternoon), committing oneself to observing the fast and performing the puja with devotion. Puja Timing: Devotees perform Lord Narasimha Puja during Sanyakal, which is just before sunset, as it is believed that the Lord appeared at that specific time. Night Vigil: It is customary to stay awake through the night in devotion and remembrance of Lord Narasimha. The following morning, devotees perform Visarjan Puja, offer Dana (charity) to Brahmins, and break the fast (Parana) only after completing all rituals.
  2. Parana – Breaking the Fast: Parana, or the act of breaking the fast, is done after sunrise on the next day, once Chaturdashi Tithi ends. If Chaturdashi ends before sunrise, the fast can be broken any time after completing the puja rituals. If Chaturdashi extends well into the day—beyond three-fourths of Dinamana (the duration from sunrise to sunset)—then Parana can be done during the first half of Dinamana.
Important: Puja and Parana timings are location-specific. Devotees should consult a reliable Panchang (Hindu calendar) like DrikPanchang.com and ensure the correct location is selected to get accurate timings for their city.

Narasimha Jayanti 2025 will be observed on May 11, and it is a day to worship one of the most powerful avatars of Lord Vishnu. Through sincere fasting, prayer, and devotion, followers seek Lord Narasimha’s divine blessings for protection, strength, and peace.
