Mohini Ekadashi, observed during the Shukla Paksha of the Vaishakh month, holds immense spiritual value in Sanatan Dharma. This sacred day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, and Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. In 2025, Mohini Ekadashi falls on 8th May, with the tithi beginning on 7th May at 10:19 AM and ending on 8th May at 12:29 PM. Following the vrat (fast) with devotion and discipline is believed to help devotees wash away sins and invite divine blessings into their homes.

To make the most of this auspicious day, here are the essential do’s and don’ts that every devotee should keep in mind:

Do’s on Mohini Ekadashi

  1. Observe the Vrat with Full Devotion: Fasting is the core of Ekadashi observance. Devotees should follow a strict fast, either nirjala (without food and water) or phalahar (fruit and milk only), depending on their capacity.
  2. Light a Diya Near Tulsi Plant: Lighting a ghee diya near the sacred Tulsi plant is considered highly auspicious. It is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and spiritual upliftment to the household.
  3. Worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi: Offer yellow flowers, tulsi leaves, fruits, and sweets to the deities. Chanting Vishnu Sahasranama and Lakshmi mantras helps draw divine grace.
  4. Perform Deepdan in a Holy River: If possible, donate earthen lamps in a sacred river after offering water to Surya Dev (Sun God). This act symbolizes the removal of darkness from life and helps in shedding past karmas.
  5. Recite the Satyanarayan Katha: Listening to or reading the story of Lord Satyanarayan is believed to bring positive energy and helps devotees stay aligned with dharma (righteousness).
  6. Feed the Needy and Offer Dakshina: Charity done on Ekadashi yields manifold rewards. Feed the poor, donate clothes or essentials, and offer dakshina (monetary offering) to Brahmins.
  7. Maintain Cleanliness and a Sattvic Lifestyle: Wake up early, take a ritual bath, and maintain purity in thoughts, words, and actions. Avoid lies, anger, and arguments throughout the day.

Don’ts on Mohini Ekadashi
  1. Avoid Eating Grains and Pulses: Food items like rice, wheat, lentils, and beans are strictly avoided on Ekadashi. Stick to vrat-friendly foods like fruits, milk, and nuts.
  2. Don’t Consume Onion, Garlic, or Non-Veg: Tamasic foods like onion, garlic, and meat are prohibited, as they disrupt spiritual vibrations and distract the mind from worship.
  3. Refrain from Gossip and Negative Talk: Mohini Ekadashi is a day of spiritual elevation. Avoid indulging in gossip, lies, criticism, or any kind of verbal conflict.
  4. Don’t Sleep During the Day: Staying awake and chanting the Lord’s name is preferred. Daytime sleeping is believed to diminish the benefits of the vrat.
  5. Avoid Cutting Hair or Nails: As with many sacred Hindu observances, trimming hair or nails on Ekadashi is avoided as a mark of respect to the sanctity of the day.
  6. Don’t Miss Arti or Bhajans: Participate in the evening aarti, sing bhajans, and stay engaged in spiritual activities as much as possible.
  7. Don’t Forget to Break the Fast Properly: The fast should be broken during the correct parana time the next day. Breaking the fast with proper rituals is just as important as observing it.

Mohini Ekadashi is not just a ritualistic fast; it’s a day for spiritual reflection, cleansing, and reconnecting with divine energies. By following the do’s and avoiding the don’ts, devotees can not only please Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi but also invite peace, prosperity, and joy into their lives.
