The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 transcends borders, drawing not only Indian saints but spiritual leaders from around the world. Among them is Mokshapuri Baba, a seer born and raised in New Mexico, USA, who has captivated attention at Prayagraj’s sacred Sangam. Once a soldier in the US Army, Baba Mokshapuri—named Michael before his rechristening—shared his extraordinary journey of transformation with News18, recounting how he embraced Indian spirituality.
“I am no different. In fact, there was a time when I was like any other common man. I used to love going out, spending time with my wife and family. I also joined the Army. But then came a point in my life where I realised that nothing is permanent. I then embarked upon this never-ending journey to attain moksha," said the seer who is closely associated with the Juna Akhara and has dedicated his life to the practice and propagation of Sanatan Dharma.
Tracing Roots
Born in the United States, Baba Mokshapuri recalls his profound transformation that began in the year 2000 when he first visited India with his wife and son.
“I still remember that visit. It was the most memorable experience of my life, one that has remained etched in my mind forever," he told News18. It was during this visit that Baba Mokshapuri was introduced to meditation and yoga and, for the first time, he learned about Sanatan Dharma. The rich culture and traditions of India deeply attracted him, sparking a spiritual awakening that he now believes was a call from the almighty.
The Turning Point The turning point in his life came after the untimely demise of his son. Baba Mokshapuri said, “It was during this tragic time that I realised nothing in life is permanent. The experience made me understand the true essence of life and the impermanence of everything. Meditation became my refuge, helping me overcome the anxiety I had been grappling with."
Dedicated Life To Yoga, Sanatan Dharma
Baba Mokshapuri has since dedicated his life to promoting yoga, meditation, and the spiritual wisdom he gained through his journey. His deep connection with India’s traditions of yoga and meditation continues to shape his life’s mission. He now travels the world, spreading the teachings of Sanatan Dharma and the healing power of spiritual practices.
Since the Ujjain Kumbh in 2016, he has made it a point to participate in every Maha Kumbh, further reinforcing his belief that such a grand tradition can only be found in India.
Propagating Sanatan Dharma The Only Mission
At the Maha Kumbh, the seer’s mission is simple yet profound: to propagate Sanatan Dharma globally. He believes meditation and yoga can serve as powerful mediums to introduce Indian culture to the world.
Drew Inspiration From Neem Karoli Baba
One of the key influences in his spiritual journey has been Neem Karoli Baba. Mokshapuri Baba recounts his experience at Neem Karoli Baba’s ashram, describing the energy and power of meditation there, and how he felt that the popular seer embodies the form of Hanuman ji (lord Hanuman) himself. The deep sense of devotion and spirituality that radiates from his ashram, Baba said, has reinforced his commitment to follow the path of devotion, meditation, and yoga.
Plans To Open Ashram In New Mexico
Mokshapuri Baba’s connection with India’s spiritual traditions runs deep, inspiring him to leave his Western lifestyle behind in favour of a life dedicated to meditation and self-realisation. His simple lifestyle and spiritual knowledge have drawn the attention of thousands of devotees at the Maha Kumbh, where he actively promotes the teachings of Indian philosophy.
Mokshapuri Baba is now planning to open an ashram in New Mexico to spread his spiritual message. When asked about his future as a seer, he said: “As long as I am alive, this is my life. My goal is to become ‘Moksha Puri’."
