Thoothukudi (Tamil Nadu), June 17: In a vibrant display of devotion and tradition, a large number of devotees gathered at the historic Sree Bhadrakali Amman Temple in Thoothukudi to perform the age-old 'Gummi' dance. This traditional folk dance is deeply rooted in Tamil culture and was performed as part of the temple's ongoing religious celebrations.

Along with the energetic dance performance, special abhishekams and deepaprarthanas were conducted in the temple premises. These rituals drew hundreds of faithful devotees who participated in the spiritual proceedings with great fervour and devotion. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali—an incarnation of Durga—is known for its grand and culturally rich festivals.

Earlier this month, on June 9, a similar devotional atmosphere was witnessed at the Tiruchendur Subramanya Swamy Temple, also located in Thoothukudi district, during the Vaikasi Visakam festival. Celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Murugan (also known as Kartikeya or Subrahmanya), this ten-day-long spring festival began on May 31 and saw massive participation from devotees across Tamil Nadu.

Devotees dressed in traditional attire thronged the temple premises and took part in daily processions and special rituals. The spiritual fervour was further enhanced by the performances of local art forms, including the popular Gummi dance, which added a cultural charm to the religious ceremonies.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Murugan is the warrior son of Lord Shiva, born to destroy the demon Tarkasura. The Vaikasi Visakam festival, especially revered in South India, highlights his divine birth and victory. The deity is often depicted with six faces and mounted on a peacock, symbolizing courage, wisdom, and divine power. Celebrations like these in Thoothukudi temples reflect the deep spiritual roots and rich cultural traditions of Tamil Nadu. They also serve as powerful reminders of the enduring connection between religion, art, and community.
