Magha Amavasya, also known as Mauni Amavasya or Maghi Amavasya, will be observed on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. This day holds immense religious significance in Hinduism and is considered one of the most auspicious occasions for taking a holy dip in sacred rivers, particularly the Ganges.

Magha Amavasya 2025: Date and Time

According to Hindu belief, the waters of the Ganges are said to turn into nectar on Magha Amavasya, making it the most auspicious day for purification and spiritual merit. Devotees from all over the country visit riverbanks to take a holy dip and seek divine blessings.

Magha Amavasya falls in the middle of the Magha month as per the North Indian lunar calendar. This day is not only a time for rituals but also a day to connect deeply with spirituality. Many devotees pledge to bathe daily in the Ganges throughout the Magha month, starting from Paush Purnima and continuing until Magha Purnima.

Kumbh Mela and Magha Amavasya

During the Kumbh Mela, Magha Amavasya is regarded as the most important bathing day. At Prayagraj (Allahabad), this day is marked by a massive influx of devotees, sages, and pilgrims who gather to participate in the sacred bath. It is also referred to as the day of Amrit Yoga and the day of Kumbh Parva, making it a vital event during the festival.

• Holy Dip in the Ganges: Devotees take an early morning bath in sacred rivers, especially the Ganges, to cleanse their sins and attain spiritual merit.
• Charity and Offerings: Performing charitable acts, such as donating clothes, food, and money to the needy, is highly recommended on this day.
• Ancestor Worship: Special rituals, known as Pitru Tarpan, are performed to honour ancestors and seek their blessings.
• Silence and Meditation: Observing silence and practising meditation are important for spiritual growth and inner peace.
