In a landmark announcement on July 10, the Maharashtra government officially declared Ganeshotsav as the State Festival of Maharashtra, recognizing the iconic celebration as a symbol of the state's cultural pride and unity. The declaration comes on the first day of Ganeshotsav 2025, marking a historic moment for devotees across the state and the country.
Ganeshotsav: More Than Just a Festival
Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar made the announcement in the legislative assembly, emphasizing that Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav is not merely a celebration, but a reflection of Maharashtra’s deep-rooted values — social harmony, nationalism, and cultural identity. Ganeshotsav was originally popularized in 1893 by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who transformed it into a public movement to unite people during the freedom struggle. The festival has since evolved into one of India’s largest public religious events, especially prominent in cities like Mumbai and Pune.
Preserving Maharashtra’s Cultural Legacy
The Maharashtra government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting and promoting the cultural heritage of Ganeshotsav. Minister Shelar underlined that while certain legal challenges had tried to restrict celebrations, the government swiftly addressed those concerns and cleared all obstacles. He added, “Our government stands firmly with this tradition, which reflects self-respect, language pride, and spiritual devotion.”
Eco-Friendly Approach and POP Idol Guidelines
Previous restrictions on Plaster of Paris (POP) idols—due to environmental concerns—had caused uncertainty among idol makers and devotees. The Mahayuti government, however, took a balanced and scientific approach. The Rajiv Gandhi Science Commission, led by the Kakodkar Committee, conducted a detailed study on POP’s environmental impact. With Union Minister Bhupender Yadav’s approval of the findings, courts ruled in favor of lifting restrictions. As a result, the manufacture, sale, and display of POP idols is now legally allowed.
State Support for Grand Celebrations
Highlighting its proactive support, the government has committed to funding major Ganesh festival celebrations in key cities. From police arrangements to infrastructure and financial aid, all necessary support will be extended to ensure smooth and grand-scale festivities. Minister Shelar also encouraged Ganpati Mandals to use this year’s decorations to showcase themes like armed forces’ valor, Operation Sindoor, social initiatives, and India’s development stories, while also paying tributes to national leaders.
By officially designating Ganeshotsav as the State Festival, Maharashtra has reinforced its dedication to spiritual traditions, cultural preservation, and unity. This move not only celebrates devotion to Lord Ganesha but also honors the historical, emotional, and social significance of one of India’s most cherished festivals.
