Types of Ganesh Visarjan

1. Ganesh Visarjan on Ganesh Chaturthi

Some devotees perform Visarjan on the very same day of Ganesh Chaturthi, right after Ganesh Puja. This tradition, though less common, is still followed in a few households.

2. One and Half Day Ganesh Visarjan

Also known as “Dhupatichi Visarjan”, this ritual is performed the next day after Ganesh Chaturthi. Devotees install the idol on Ganesh Chaturthi and immerse it the following afternoon after Madhyahna Puja.

3. 3rd, 5th, and 7th Day Ganesh Visarjan

Many families immerse Ganesha idols on the 3rd, 5th, or 7th day, as per their traditions. These odd-numbered days are considered spiritually significant.

4. Ganesh Visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi (11th Day)

The most popular and significant day for Ganesh Visarjan is Anant Chaturdashi, which falls on the 11th day from Ganesh Chaturthi. This day also marks the worship of Lord Vishnu in his Anant form. Devotees observe a day-long fast and tie a sacred thread, believed to protect them from troubles.

Ganesh Visarjan: Rituals and Significance

  • Ganeshotsav begins with Ganesh Sthapana (idol installation) on Ganesh Chaturthi and ends with Ganesh Visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi.
  • Before immersion, devotees offer flowers, coconuts, modaks, and sweets to Lord Ganesha.
  • The idol is then carried in a grand procession with music, dhol-tasha, and chants of “Ganapati Bappa Morya”.
  • The immersion symbolizes the cycle of creation and dissolution, teaching us the importance of detachment and faith.
Ganesh Visarjan Celebrations Across India
  • Mumbai: The most vibrant celebrations are witnessed in Mumbai under the guidance of Ganpati Mandals. The processions continue throughout the night with lakhs of devotees joining.
  • Telugu-speaking regions: Visarjan is popularly called Vinayaka Nimajjanam.
  • Household traditions: Some families immerse the idol in a tub or bucket of water at home as an eco-friendly practice.

On Anant Chaturdashi, along with Ganesh Visarjan, devotees also worship Lord Vishnu. The day is believed to bring prosperity, remove obstacles, and grant protection. This is why it is considered the most auspicious time to bid farewell to Lord Ganesha.
