Choti Diwali (Narak Chaturdashi): Significance

Choti Diwali marks the second day of the five-day Diwali festival and is celebrated with deep devotion across India. It is believed that observing Abhyang Snan on this day helps one attain spiritual purity and protects against negative karma. According to Hindu belief, performing the ritual bath before sunrise during the Chaturdashi Tithi saves devotees from suffering in Narak (hell).

Choti Diwali 2025: Puja Vidhi of Abhyang Snan

The main ritual of Choti Diwali is the Abhyang Snan, performed before sunrise. Devotees apply Til (sesame) oil and a special herbal paste (ubtan) before bathing, symbolizing the cleansing of body and soul. It is considered highly auspicious to take this sacred bath during the moonrise and before sunrise while the Chaturdashi Tithi is still prevailing.

As per Hindu scriptures, Abhyang Snan is recommended on three days during Diwali — Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali), Amavasya (Lakshmi Puja), and Pratipada (Govardhan Puja). Among these, Chaturdashi Snan is considered the most significant, as it is believed to grant protection from negative energies and misfortune.

Choti Diwali Spiritual Importance

The day is also called Roop Chaudas or Roop Chaturdashi, symbolizing beauty, purification, and inner strength. Traditionally, devotees light lamps early in the morning and decorate their homes to welcome divine energies. Lighting a diya (lamp) is also believed to dispel darkness and invite prosperity.

Kali Chaudas and Narak Chaturdashi: Difference

While both Kali Chaudas and Narak Chaturdashi fall on the same Tithi (Chaturdashi), they are distinct in their observances. Kali Chaudas is dedicated to Goddess Kali and observed mainly in western India, whereas Narak Chaturdashi is associated with Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura. Depending on the Panchang, these two festivals may fall on consecutive days.

Choti Diwali, or Narak Chaturdashi 2025, is a day of spiritual cleansing and renewal. Through early morning rituals, lighting lamps, and prayers, devotees seek liberation from negativity and invite peace, beauty, and divine blessings into their homes.
