The pilgrimage season will begin on April 19, 2026, when the temple portals of Yamunotri and Gangotri open for devotees. The portals of Kedarnath and Badrinath will open shortly after, allowing pilgrims to complete the sacred Char Dham circuit.

Mandatory registration for Char Dham Yatra 2026

Authorities have made registration compulsory for all pilgrims planning to visit the Char Dham shrines. The initiative aims to ensure better crowd management, improved safety, and a smoother pilgrimage experience.

According to officials from the tourism department, devotees can complete the registration through several digital platforms. Pilgrims must provide identification details, including their Aadhaar card, during the registration process.

Foreign nationals who wish to participate in the yatra can register through the email facility available on the official registration portal.

How to register for char ham Yatra 2026

Pilgrims can register through the following options:

  1. Devotees can visit the official Char Dham Yatra portal and complete the registration process online.
  2. Registration is also available through the Tourist Care Uttarakhand mobile application, making it convenient for pilgrims to apply directly from their smartphones.

Officials have clarified that entry to the shrines will not be permitted without registration, making it essential for devotees to complete the process in advance. To assist devotees who may not have access to online platforms, the government will also provide offline registration services. These physical registration counters will start functioning from April 17, 2026, two days before the pilgrimage begins.

Offline registration centers will be set up at key locations, including:

  • Rishikesh: Yatra Registration Centre and Transit Camp
  • Haridwar: Rishikul Ground
  • Dehradun: Vikasnagar

These facilities will help pilgrims complete the registration process easily before starting the yatra.

To ensure the safety of pilgrims, the Uttarakhand government has introduced a GPS-based monitoring system. This system allows authorities to track registered pilgrims and regulate the number of visitors at each shrine.

The monitoring mechanism helps prevent overcrowding and ensures that emergency assistance can be provided quickly if required. In addition, a 24-hour toll-free helpline (0135-1364) has been activated to assist pilgrims and address any grievances during the pilgrimage season.

Expected increase in pilgrim footfall

Tourism officials and local businesses expect a significant rise in pilgrim numbers this year. Hotel associations in the region have reported that bookings are currently around 8–10 percent but the figure is expected to rise sharply once the pilgrimage begins.

Last year, the Char Dham Yatra witnessed over 5.9 million registrations. Around 4.8 million pilgrims visited the four shrines and Hemkund Sahib, highlighting the massive scale of the pilgrimage.

In fact, 2023 recorded one of the highest pilgrim turnouts, with the number crossing 5.6 million devotees.

Spiritual importance of Char Dham Yatra

The Char Dham Yatra holds immense religious significance in Hindu tradition. Devotees believe that visiting these sacred Himalayan shrines helps cleanse past karmas and brings spiritual liberation.

The pilgrimage journey takes devotees through the majestic Himalayan landscape, offering both spiritual fulfillment and a deep connection with nature and faith.
