Chaitra Navratri 2025 Kalash Sthapana: Step-by-step Guide and Mantras

Most of the customs and rituals observed during Shardiya Navratri are also observed during Chaitra Navratri. Ghatasthapana Muhurta and Sandhi Puja Muhurta are more popular during Shardiya Navratri, but these Muhurta(s) are also needed during Chaitra Navratri.

Importance of Ghatasthapana

Ghatasthapana is one of the significant rituals during Navratri. It marks the beginning of nine days of festivity. Our scriptures have well-defined rules and guidelines to perform Ghatasthapana at a certain period of time at the beginning of Navratri. Ghatasthapana is the invocation of Goddess Shakti, and doing it at the wrong time, as our scriptures forewarn, might bring the wrath of Goddess Shakti. Ghatasthapana is prohibited during Amavasya and nighttime.

Shubh Muhurat for Ghatasthapana

The most auspicious or Shubh time to perform Ghatasthapana is during the first one-third of the day while Pratipada is prevailing. If, due to some reasons, this time is not available, then Ghatasthapana can be done during Abhijit Muhurta. It is advised to avoid Nakshatra Chitra and Vaidhriti Yoga during Ghatasthapana, but those are not strictly prohibited. The most important factor to consider is that Ghatasthapana should be done before Hindu midday while Pratipada is prevailing.

Step-by-Step Guide to Perform Kalash Sthapana

  1. Gather the Essentials: You will need a clean clay or brass pot (Kalash), sacred soil, barley seeds, mango leaves, coconut, red cloth, and Ganga Jal.
  2. Prepare the Kalash: Fill the pot with water, add betel nuts, coins, and a few drops of Ganga Jal. Place mango leaves around the pot’s mouth.
  3. Cover with a Coconut: Wrap a red cloth around the coconut and place it on top of the Kalash.
  4. Invoke the Goddess: Chant the mantra “ॐ देवी दुर्गायै नमः” while placing the Kalash on a sacred altar.
  5. Offer Flowers and Diyas: Light a diya and incense sticks, and offer flowers to the Kalash while praying for blessings.
  6. Maintain Daily Worship: Throughout Navratri, water the barley seeds, recite Durga Saptashati, and offer bhog to the goddess.

Powerful Mantras for Kalash Sthapana

Reciting mantras during Ghatasthapana enhances the spiritual energy and devotion. Some important mantras include:

  • Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Vichche - Chant this to invoke Goddess Durga’s divine presence.
  • Om Devi Durgaayai Namah - A simple yet powerful mantra to seek blessings.
  • Om Dum Durgayei Namaha - To remove obstacles and receive strength.

Ghatasthapana is a sacred ritual that signifies the beginning of Chaitra Navratri. By following the right procedure and performing daily puja with devotion, devotees can seek the divine blessings of Goddess Durga. Ensure that you follow the correct Muhurat and chant the mantras with a pure heart for a fulfilling Navratri celebration.
