Buddha Purnima 2025: Buddha Purnima, also known as Buddha Jayanti or Vesak, is one of the most sacred days in Buddhism. In 2025, this significant occasion will be celebrated on Monday, May 12, marking the 2587th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha, the enlightened one.

Gautama Buddha, originally named Siddhartha Gautama, was a spiritual leader and philosopher whose teachings laid the foundation of Buddhism. Though the exact dates of his life remain debated, most scholars estimate his lifetime between 563 BCE and 483 BCE. He was born in Lumbini, present-day Nepal, and attained Mahaparinirvana (death) at the age of 80 in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh.

Buddha Purnima falls in the Vaishakha month and commemorates three major events in Buddha’s life—his birth, his enlightenment, and his passing away. It is believed that Siddhartha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, which today remains the most revered pilgrimage site for Buddhists across the globe.

Apart from Bodh Gaya, the three other sacred Buddhist sites are:

  1. Lumbini – the birthplace of Buddha
  2. Sarnath – where he delivered his first sermon
  3. Kushinagar – where he passed away
Buddha: The 9th Avatar of Vishnu?

In North Indian tradition, Gautama Buddha is regarded as the 9th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, following Lord Krishna. However, South Indian belief systems differ, where Balarama is considered the 8th avatar, and Krishna the 9th. Many Vaishnava sects also uphold this interpretation, recognizing Balarama as an avatar of Vishnu.

Interestingly, most Buddhists do not view Buddha as an incarnation of Vishnu, highlighting the difference between Hindu and Buddhist perspectives on divinity.

Celebrations Across the Globe

On Buddha Purnima, devotees visit monasteries, light lamps, offer prayers, and engage in acts of kindness and charity. It’s a time of reflection, learning, and embracing the core teachings of Buddha—compassion, peace, and mindfulness.

As we approach May 12, 2025, millions around the world will honor the wisdom of Gautama Buddha and reflect on his message that continues to guide humanity towards peace and enlightenment.
