Ahilyabai Holkar Jayanti is observed every year on 31 May to mark the birth anniversary of Rajmata Ahilyabai Holkar, one of India’s most respected historical figures. In 2025, the day will be observed on Saturday, 31 May, and will mark 300 years since her birth.

Who Was Ahilyabai Holkar?

Rajmata Ahilyabai Holkar was born on 31 May 1725 in the village of Chondi, in present-day Maharashtra. She belonged to a Marathi Hindu family and went on to become the ruler of Indore in the 18th century after the death of her father-in-law, Malhar Rao Holkar. Known for her leadership and dedication to public welfare, she ruled with fairness and focus on development.

Ahilyabai Holkar was widowed at a young age after the death of her husband, Khanderao Holkar. After losing her father-in-law and her son, Male Rao Holkar, she took over the affairs of the Holkar dynasty. She is remembered for her strong leadership during challenging times and for defending Indore from invasions. Her brother-in-law, Tukoji Rao Holkar, served as her military commander.

Ahilyabai Holkar is known for her work in social welfare, education, religion, and public infrastructure. She built temples, ghats, and dharamshalas across India, using resources for the benefit of pilgrims and the poor. Some of the well-known places she developed or restored include:

  • Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi
  • Gauri Somnath Mandir at Chola
  • Dashashwamedh Ghat in Banaras

She also focused on the growth of trade, education, and public services in Indore, transforming the city into a centre of prosperity.

Ahilyabai Holkar Jayanti Significance

The Jayanti is primarily observed in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, especially in Indore. People pay tribute to her by organising cultural events, public gatherings, and educational programmes. Her life and contributions are remembered and discussed, especially her role in promoting justice, women's rights, and inclusive governance.

In 1996, the Government of India issued a postal stamp in her honour. The Indore airport is also named after her, Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport.

Marking 300 years of her birth, Ahilyabai Holkar Jayanti 2025 is expected to be observed with greater significance. The Government of Maharashtra has announced a project worth Rs 681 crore to develop the ‘Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Smarak Sthal’.
