Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) firm DeepSeek has stunned the tech industry with the launch of highly efficient AI models, rivaling advanced products from US companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.
A major factor behind its success is the team of "young geniuses" driving it forward, including 29-year-old researcher, Luo Fuli, hailed as an "AI prodigy" by Chinese media, according to the South China Morning Post.
Who is Luo Fuli?
- Luo Fuli became a national sensation following reports that Xiaomi founder Lei Jun had offered her a 10 million yuan ($1.4 million) annual package, though recent updates indicate she has not yet made a decision, as per South China Morning Post.
-Luo’s path started at Beijing Normal University, where she overcame early struggles in computer science to achieve academic success.
-She later advanced to Peking University's Institute of Computational Linguistics, publishing eight papers at the renowned ACL conference in 2019.
-In 2022, Luo joined DeepSeek, where her expertise in natural language processing significantly contributed to the development of DeepSeek-V2, which has emerged as a strong competitor to ChatGPT.
-Her work in the field caught the attention of some of the major tech companies including Xiaomi as well as Alibaba.
The emergence of DeepSeek has raised alarms that China may have outpaced the US in the AI race, despite restrictions on high-end chip access. This is part of a broader effort by Chinese companies to make China the global AI leader by 2030 and outdo the US in the fight for technological supremacy.
DeepSeek's AI assistant became the number 1 downloaded free app on Apple's iPhone store on Tuesday afternoon and its launch made Wall Street tech superstars' stocks tumble. Observers are eager to see whether the Chinese company has matched America's leading AI companies at a fraction of the cost.
