President-elect Donald Trump will take his oath of office on Monday, January 20, using two symbolic Bibles: a cherished Bible given to him by his mother in 1955 and the historic Lincoln Bible. The announcement came on Friday from the inaugural committee, just as plans for the ceremony were adjusted due to dangerously cold weather expected in Washington, D.C.
The Bible Trump will use carries deep personal significance. A 1953 Revised Standard Version, was presented to him as a gift by church officials to mark his graduation from Sunday Church Primary School at the First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica, New York. The Bible is embossed with his name on the front cover and inscribed with details of the occasion.
Joining it will be the iconic Lincoln Bible, first used by President Abraham Lincoln at his inauguration on March 4, 1861. The burgundy velvet-bound book, part of the Library of Congress collection, has been used only three times since—twice by President Barack Obama and by Trump himself at his 2017 inauguration.
Vice President-elect J.D. Vance will also honour his roots during the historic event. He will take his oath using a family Bible belonging to his late maternal great-grandmother, Bonnie “Mamaw” Vance. Presented to him in 2003, the King James Version Bible accompanied him when he left home to join the Marine Corps.
