US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that his administration's paused tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada will take effect on March 4, alongside an additional 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods.
The 25 percent tariffs on Mexico and Canada, originally set to be implemented last month, were temporarily delayed on February 3. However, uncertainty surrounded whether the levies would be reinstated after the pause expired.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump confirmed the tariffs would proceed as planned, citing concerns over illicit drug trafficking from both neighboring countries.
“We cannot allow this scourge to continue to harm the USA, and therefore, until it stops, or is seriously limited, the proposed TARIFFS scheduled to go into effect on MARCH FOURTH will, indeed, go into effect, as scheduled,” Trump wrote.
He further announced that China, which currently faces a 10 percent tariff on its exports to the U.S., will be hit with an additional 10 percent levy starting the same day. Trump also reaffirmed that the “April Second Reciprocal Tariff date” remains unchanged.
