A powerful earthquake with a initial magnitude of 6.9 has hit Japan's Kyushu region on Monday, said Japan Meteorological Agency.
The agency issued tsunami warnings for Miyazaki Prefecture, where the earthquake was centered, in the Kyushu region, as well as for nearby Kochi Prefecture, shortly after the tremor occurred at 9:19 pm local time.
The extent of the damage is not yet known.
Japan is prone to frequent earthquakes due to its position along the "Ring of Fire," a region in the Pacific Basin characterized by volcanoes and fault lines.
