Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation has come amid various controversies including the Islamic fundamentalist organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir’s plan to hold an event in Canada, according to CNN-News18.
The Caliphate Conference is scheduled for January 18 in Hamilton. Earlier, Mississauga city mayor Carolyn Parrish opposed the event. However, the Canada unit of Hizb ut-Tahrir denied allegations of being a violent organisation. In a statement, it said that it rejects violence in its pursuit of establishing a caliphate in the Muslim world, as quoted by CNN-News18. The group claims to operate within Islamic principles.
Hizb-ut-Tahrir, founded in Jerusalem in 1953, is a global pan-Islamic group.
The group's headquarters is in Lebanon and it operates in at least over 30 countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia. Last year, the group’s conference in the UK was cancelled after it was officially declared a terrorist organisation. In October 2024, The Indian government declared “Hizb-Ut-Tahrir” as a terrorist organisation. In a gazette notification, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) accused the HuT of promoting terrorism by using various social media platforms, secure apps and by conducting 'Dawah' meetings to encourage gullible youth to indulge in acts of terrorism.
In Bangladesh, the group’s influence has reportedly grown since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina. The interim administration under Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has faced criticism for appointing Nasimul Gani, a founder of Hizb ut-Tahrir Bangladesh, as Home Secretary, effectively endorsing the organisation.
The planned conference aims to establish a Muslim caliphate governed by Islamic Sharia law, according to CNN-News18.
Videos of Mazin Abdul-Adhim of Hizb ut-Tahrir have emerged, where he urges Muslims to overthrow the governments in their countries to help establish the caliphate.
"This is the time to overthrow your governments."You know the Caliphate Conference in Mississauga on Jan 18? Hizb ut-Tahrir has been met with opposition from Canadian MPs, who are concerned about the group’s extremist ideology.
India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) recently filed charges against Abdul Rehman and Mujibur Rehman, alleged members of Hizb ut-Tahrir, for terrorist activities in Tamil Nadu and other regions.
As January 18 approaches, the Mississauga conference has become a litmus test for Canada’s stance on terrorism. According to reports, the event not only challenges the country’s internal security framework but also its global reputation as a defender of democratic values.
