Los Angeles based Gehry Partners has won the architectural competition for the tallest residential tower in Berlin. Some of the other firms that participated in the competition include Adjaye Associates (London); Architectonica (Miami); Barkow Leibinger Architects (Berlin); Kleihues + Kleihues Gesellschaft (Berlin) and David Chipperfield Architects (London/Berlin). The chosen design for the 300-unit tower comprises rotating stacks of sculptural, stone-clad cubes that rise up to 150 meters. The 5,00,000-square-foot structure will constitute a mix of apartments and penthouses; however a portion of the tower will be used as a hotel. The building will be developed by the Houston-based Hines Group. Construction on the $337 million project is likely to commence in 2015 with an expected completion date of 2017.
