Alejandro Aravena of Chile is the first winner of the prestigious Pritzer Architecture Prize from Chile and the fourth from Latin America. The formal award ceremony will be held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on 4th April, 2016. The 48 year-old Aravena is the 41st laureate of the Pritzer Prize and is currently based in Santiago. “His built work gives economic opportunity to the less privileged, mitigates the effects of natural disasters, reduces energy consumption, and provides welcoming public space. Innovative and inspiring, he shows how architecture at its best can improve people’s lives,” says Thomas Pritzker, Chief Executive, The Pritzker Organization. The architect in his career has created a wide range of architecture that ranges from high-budget educational and institutional buildings to post tsunami reconstruction and low-income construction. He is also the director of the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale, opening in May.
