US President Donald Trump has stated that he has no intention of deporting Prince Harry or pursuing his visa case, despite ongoing litigation questioning the Duke of Sussex’s immigration status. Trump suggested that Harry was already dealing with "enough problems" due to his wife, Meghan Markle.
“I don’t want to do that,” Trump told the New York Post in an interview on Friday. “I’ll leave him alone. He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible.”
Trump’s remarks come amid legal challenges surrounding Prince Harry’s US visa. The conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation has questioned whether Harry disclosed his past illegal drug use on his visa application, as required by US immigration law. The organisation has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security, seeking the release of Harry’s visa records.
Nile Gardiner, a director at The Heritage Foundation, stated, “Anyone who applies to the United States has to be truthful on their application, and it is not clear that is the case with Prince Harry.”
The lawsuit was prompted by Harry’s admissions in his memoir Spare, where he detailed past drug use, including cocaine, cannabis, and psychedelics. Typically, such disclosures can impact an individual’s eligibility for a US visa.
While a judge ruled that Harry’s visa records would remain confidential, concerns persist over whether he received preferential treatment when he moved to California in 2020 with Meghan Markle, following their departure from the British royal family.
During the interview, Trump took the opportunity to praise Prince Harry’s older brother, Prince William. “He’s a great young man,” Trump said, referencing their private meeting in December 2024 during the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
The US President has, however, maintained a long-standing feud with Harry and Meghan. Meghan has previously called Trump “divisive” and “misogynistic,” while the President has frequently mocked Harry, claiming that the prince is “whipped” by Meghan.
“I’m not a fan of Meghan, never have been from the start,” Trump said in 2022. “I think poor Harry is being led around by his nose.”
While Trump has ruled out taking action against Harry’s immigration status, the legal battle continues. The Heritage Foundation remains committed to its efforts, arguing that transparency is necessary regarding how the Biden administration handled Harry’s visa application.
