Bering Air plane carrying 10 people goes missing while flying over Alaska; rescue ops continues

A Bering Air flight, carrying 10 people onboard, reportedly disappeared from radar near Nome, Alaska on Friday, BNO News reported.

The report also shared a statement from Alaska State Troopers, confirming that the missing plane was a commercial flight operated by Bering Air. Alaska State Troopers said the missing aircraft was carrying 10 people, including 9 passengers and 1 pilot.

“On February 6, 2025, at 4.00 pm, AST was contacted by AKRCC in reference to an overdue aircraft. It was reported that a Bering Air Caravan had gone missing while en route from Unalakteet to Nome, with 9 passengers and 1 pilot on board. SAR crews are working to get to the last known coordinates. Updates to follow,” the statement read.

A ground search is underway to locate the possible wreckage of the plane, another media report claimed.

“Right now air support is not available because of the weather and icing, so we’re doing a ground effort right now,” Alaska Public Media News quoted Danielle Sem, a spokesperson for tribal non-profit Kawerak, as saying.

“We are currently responding to a report of a missing Bering Air Caravan,” the Nome Volunteer Fire Department told BNONews. “We are conducting an active ground search from Nome and White Mountain and are gathering the most up-to-date information on the incident.”

The cause of the disappearance is currently unknown, but bad weather has been reported in the area.

“Due to weather and visibility, we are limited in our ability to conduct an aerial search at this time,” the Nome Fire Department said. “We ask the public to keep those who may be missing in their thoughts, but for safety reasons, please do not form independent search parties.”

According to reports, the US Coast Guard is preparing to send a C-130 aircraft to survey the area, while the US Air Force is deploying air support from Elmendorf Air Force Base, the fire department confirmed in an update. Ground crews are also actively searching the area.
