US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order cutting aid to South Africa, citing concerns over the country’s land expropriation policy. The order also offers resettlement in the US to white South African farmers, particularly Afrikaners, whom Trump claims face discrimination under the new law according to Associated Press.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the land expropriation act last month to address racial land ownership disparities rooted in apartheid-era policies. The law aims to redistribute land more equitably, as a large portion remains in white ownership. However, Trump has framed the policy as a violation of human rights, stating in a tweet that South Africa is "confiscating land" and "treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY."
South Africa is confiscating land, and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY. It is a bad situation that the Radical Left Media doesnt want to so much as mention. A massive Human Rights VIOLATION is happening, for all to see. The United States wont stand for it - WeDonald J. Trump Posts From His Truth Social (@TrumpDailyPosts) February 9, 2025
Despite Trump’s offer, key Afrikaner groups, including AfriForum and the Solidarity Movement, have rejected the opportunity to migrate, emphasising their commitment to resolving issues within South Africa, according to a report by Associated Press. Orania, an Afrikaner-only enclave, also declined, stating, "Afrikaners do not want to be refugees."
While some white South Africans welcomed Trump’s gesture, the South African government has dismissed his claims, accusing him of spreading misinformation, AP adds.
