New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has only just moved into Gracie Mansion, the city’s official mayoral residence, but one of his first thoughts about renovations has already caught the internet’s attention. While most new occupants of a historic mansion might focus on décor, furniture, or repairs, Mamdani has set his sights on something far more practical, installing bidets in the bathrooms.
The idea, which many online users have called the ‘most desi’ renovation possible, has sparked a wave of reactions. Mamdani moved into Gracie Mansion on January 12, 2026, along with his wife, Rama Duwaji.
Speaking about the move, Mamdani shared his thoughts in a video posted by NBC New York on Instagram. Reflecting on the moment, he said, “Today, Rama and I feel lucky to participate in a ritual that so many New Yorkers have experienced at various meaningful moments in their lives: Beginning a new chapter, by moving to a different part of the city that we call home.”
When speaking to reporters after settling into Gracie Mansion, Mamdani revealed one of his personal wishes for the residence. He said, “We will be installing a few bidgets into Gracie Mansion. That's an aspirational hope.”

The remark instantly buzzed online. Bidets, which are widely used in parts of Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, remain relatively uncommon in the US. For many Americans, toilet paper continues to be the standard. However, for people from South Asian or Middle Eastern backgrounds, bidets are often considered essential.
As a result, netizens were quick to link Mamdani’s bidet plans to his roots. One user summed up the mood by writing, “Tell me he’s desi without telling me he’s desi.” Another user added, “He understands, bidet is definitely a priority.”
Others used the moment to call for wider acceptance of bidets across the country. One comment read, “Can we please do bidets in America everywhere.? Can we please make this a trend.?” Another netizen echoed the sentiment, saying, “I wish bidets are common thing in all restrooms.”
Several users praised Mamdani not just for the idea itself, but for how casually and openly he spoke about it. “Gotta love how chill and common sense this guy is,” one comment read.
