Mumbai on Monday faced intense heat, with temperatures reaching 37.2°C, nearly five degrees above the seasonal average.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Santacruz recorded 37.2°C, exceeding the usual range by 4.8°C, while Colaba registered 36.4°C, 5.3°C higher than the typical temperature.
Mumbai also saw an increase in minimum temperatures, with Colaba registering 23.7°C and Santacruz at 21.6°C during the early morning hours.
The IMD had originally issued a heatwave warning for Tuesday but later lifted it. However, a yellow alert for "hot and humid" conditions is still in place, as temperatures are expected to remain around 37°C before gradually decreasing later in the week.
IMD predicts a gradual decrease in maximum temperatures from Wednesday, with daytime highs likely to settle at around 34°C by March 14.
IMD Mumbai director Sunil Kamble told The Indian Express that the current heatwave was mainly caused by consistent easterly winds. However, a shift in wind patterns is anticipated to provide much-needed relief.
“We can expect northerly winds — which are cooler — after a period owing to the passage a western disturbance. We also expect timely westerlies (sea breeze) while the high pressure area may also weaken. All these factors are expected to usher in a drop in temperatures from March 12,” he stated.
This is Mumbai's second heatwave of the season, following the first one from February 26 to 27. The elevated humidity levels have exacerbated the heat, making it even more difficult for residents to endure the intense conditions.
Authorities have advised people to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and take necessary measures to protect themselves from heat-related conditions such as heat exhaustion and dehydration.
With cooler winds on the way and the weakening of high-pressure systems, residents can expect a welcome relief from the harsh heat in the upcoming days.
