A routine Muscat–Mumbai flight turned into a life-changing journey for a woman from Thailand on Thursday, when she unexpectedly went into labour mid-air and gave birth to a baby boy aboard an Air India Express aircraft.
The incident occurred thousands of feet above ground, prompting swift action from the airline crew and a nurse who happened to be travelling as a fellow passenger. According to the airline, the delivery was successfully carried out onboard with the support of trained cabin crew and the nurse.
“The moment the Thai national went into labour, the crew responded swiftly – drawing on their rigorous training to ensure a secure and compassionate environment for the birth,” Air India Express said in an official statement.
Once the pilots were alerted to the medical emergency, they promptly contacted Air Traffic Control to request a priority landing at Mumbai. By the time the aircraft landed, a medical team and ambulance had already been dispatched to the airport to assist the mother and her newborn son.
Both were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care. A female staff member from the airline also accompanied them, providing additional support, Air India Express confirmed.
The airline added that it is in close contact with the Consulate General of Thailand in Mumbai to facilitate assistance for the mother and child as they prepare for their return home.
The in-flight birth drew praise for the crew’s composed and efficient response to the emergency.
