In the wake of India's precision strikes under "Operation Sindoor" targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, a wave of misinformation has surged across social media platforms, leading to public anxiety and panic buying.

A widely circulated message, resembling an official government advisory, urged citizens to stock up on essentials, including non-perishable food, medicines, fuel, and to keep emergency contacts handy, citing escalating tensions along the India-Pakistan border.

The advisory, which mirrored civil defence protocols, was not issued by any official agency. The Press Information Bureau's (PIB) Fact Check unit swiftly addressed the misinformation, stating, "The government has not issued any such advisory. Beware! Trust only official government sources for credible information. Stay cautious and avoid sharing unverified claims."

Despite the clarification, the fake advisory continued to spread, prompting concerns over the role of social media in amplifying unverified information during times of national crisis. Authorities have urged the public to rely on official channels for updates and to refrain from sharing unverified messages that could contribute to unnecessary panic.

Operation Sindoorwas launched by the Indian Armed Forces in response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians. The operation targeted nine sites associated with terrorist groups, including Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The situation remains tense, with both nations engaging in diplomatic and military posturing. The Indian government continues to monitor the situation closely and has reiterated its commitment to national security while urging citizens to remain calm and vigilant against misinformation.
