An Indian-origin postal worker in Australia won widespread admiration online after security camera footage revealed his thoughtful gesture of rescuing a woman’s laundry from sudden rain. The act, which was described by many as “one in a million,” drew global attention and was even acknowledged by actor Priyanka Chopra.
The incident took place in Kingston, southeast of Brisbane. Local resident Verrity Wandel had left her sheets drying outdoors, unaware of the approaching storm. Expecting to find them drenched on her return, she was instead surprised to discover the washing neatly folded and placed by her door. Curious to know what had happened, she reviewed her CCTV system.
The footage showed Australia Post worker Gurpreet Singh, who had been delivering a parcel, taking the time to remove the laundry from the line, fold each item carefully, and place them in a sheltered spot.
Sharing the video on Instagram, Wandel wrote: “This is 1 in a million. I was on my way home and the heavens opened. I thought there goes the sheets. When I got home the line was empty. I had to watch the cameras to see what happened. The postie brought my wash in out of the rain.”
Her post quickly went viral, attracting more than three million views across platforms. The gesture sparked a wave of praise from social media users. Many described Singh’s act as rare in today’s world, with one person commenting: “Another side of Indian, social media never likes to show.”
Another wrote: “For him, it is probably a spiritual experience. In Sikhism, service, known as ‘Seva,’ is a fundamental principle emphasising selfless action and dedication to the well-being of others. It is a core aspect of Sikh philosophy and practice, rooted in the belief that serving humanity is equivalent to serving God.”
One user highlighted Sikh community traditions: “You should go to their temple, they feed you, and the shoes you leave at the door of the temple, they clean it for you. When there is ever help needed Sikhs are always first to show up, whatever religion you come from.”
Others focused on the rarity of such thoughtfulness. “Beautiful randomness of kindness. Very rare these days. Hope you rang his work to give him some praise. He at least deserved that. So many people are quick to ring and complain, though never ring to give credit unfortunately,” a commenter said.
Among the many who noticed the video was actor Priyanka Chopra. The global star liked the post and went on to share it on her Instagram story, applauding Singh’s gesture.
Several users also noted the significance of his background. One remarked: “He is Sikh (Punjabi, Indian). They are known for being one of the kindest. Being kind and thoughtful is in his DNA.”
Another comment read: “That’s not service… That’s just being thoughtful and kind.”
Someone else added: “This is what being a Sikh is all about. It’s integral to our being.”
One more follower summed it up by saying: “This is the greenest flag for a person ever!”
Speaking later to Sunrise, Singh explained that his actions were simply part of how he approached his job.
“I like helping, like just sliding a customer’s parcels inside their premises or under the doorway because we are not allowed to go inside. So helping them out (by) taking their parcel upstairs, these sort of things,” he said.
Australia Post also commended his behaviour. In a statement to news.com.au, a spokesperson said: “Australia Post has high standards around the delivery of parcels and mail, and we are proud of the dedication and care shown by our team members across the country. We commend our Brisbane contractor for going above and beyond to help his customer.”
Wandel later met Singh in person and shared a cheerful selfie of the two on Instagram, further delighting viewers who had followed the story.
