A 20-year-old man sustained serious burn injuries when the western-style toilet in his home exploded, allegedly due to a buildup of methane gas. The incident occurred on Saturday around 3 PM at house number C-364 in Sector 36.
The victim, identified as Ashu Nagar, had just pressed the flush button when the toilet seat exploded with a loud bang, triggering a fire. Ashu suffered severe burn injuries to his face and body. He was rushed to the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida, where doctors confirmed he had suffered 35% burns.
Ashu's father, Sunil Pradhan, stated that his son was not using any electronic devices at the time, ruling out gadget-related causes. All household appliances, including the air conditioning, were functioning properly. Initial assessments suggest that methane gas may have accumulated inside the toilet bowl due to a clogged drain. A spark—though the exact source remains unknown—ignited the gas, leading to the explosion.
Local resident Harinder Bhati voiced concern about the state of the area's sewage infrastructure, stating, “Pipes here are not just old, they haven’t been cleaned in years. Choked pipes can lead to the accumulation of dangerous gases like methane, especially in enclosed spaces like bathrooms.”
Environmental and infrastructure experts agree that poorly maintained or aged sewage systems, particularly in residential areas with limited oversight, can become breeding grounds for combustible gases. If a bathroom is poorly ventilated or the drainage system is not working efficiently, the risk of a gas buildup increases significantly.
AP Verma, a senior manager with the Greater Noida Authority, confirmed that a formal inspection of the area's sewage infrastructure had been carried out. “The system is clean and functioning normally. It appears that the explosion might have resulted from gas accumulation due to a temporary blockage or internal plumbing issue rather than a systemic failure,” he stated.
