Maye Musk describes stay at Elon Musk’s $50,000 Boca Chica home, says she slept in the garage

Maye Musk has shared details about staying at a property belonging to her son, Elon Musk, offering a glimpse of his living arrangements near the Boca Chica, Texas.

Her comments came in response to a post on the social media platform X, where a user shared an image claimed to show the interior of Musk’s residence and described the space as containing only the most basic household items.

The photograph circulated online shows a sparse, open-plan room that combines a living area with a kitchen. The kitchen section appears to include white cupboards, a refrigerator, a cooking range and a farmhouse-style sink positioned beneath a window.

In the foreground of the image, a dark wooden coffee table holds several objects, including a rocket-shaped decorative piece that appears to reference Musk’s space company SpaceX. A katana sword and a small stack of books are also visible.

A simple dining table stood nearby. Apart from a small textured rug placed beneath the table, the room appears largely undecorated. The walls have no visible artwork or decorative features, and the furnishings appear basic and functional. A doorway leading into another room can also be seen in the image.

Responding to the post, Maye Musk reposted the image and added further comments describing her stay at the property. “There is no food in the fridge,” she wrote. She also explained where she slept during her visit, stating: “The garage where I slept is on the right.”

Maye Musk also referred to the limited bathroom facilities she encountered at the property. “The shower only has one towel so I left it for Elon. That was okay with me,” she wrote.

In the same thread, she reflected on her childhood experiences to explain why the circumstances did not trouble her.

“When I was a child, I’d spend three weeks in the Kalahari Desert without showering. Many times. There was no water. I think my parents prepared me for this luxury.”

The comments triggered a wide range of responses from users online, many of whom reflected on the contrast between Musk’s immense wealth and the apparent simplicity of his home.

One user wrote: “The fewer material things you have, the easier it becomes to focus on what truly matters. Many possessions quietly take time, attention, and mental energy that could be used for more important things. In many cases, material goods are designed to constantly compete for your attention and drain the energy you need for proper functioning. I think Elon Musk understands this very, very well.”

Another remarked: “I don’t like it. I think he could at least buy some food, set up a guest room for his mum, and install some windows with a view of the garden. The world isn’t only about rockets and free speech – it’s also about the little things.”

A third user posted: “Elon is really devoted his life for his dream- humanity.”

The discussion also revived earlier statements made by Elon Musk about reducing his personal possessions. In 2020, he wrote on X that he planned to sell most of what he owned. “I am selling almost all physical possessions. Will own no house,” he said at the time.

Following that announcement, Musk placed seven of his residential properties in California on the market with a combined asking price reported to be about $100 million.

Musk, who has been described as the world’s richest person with an estimated net worth of $836.7 billion, is understood to live close to the Starbase complex near Boca Chica.

In a post on X in 2021, he explained his living arrangement in the area. “My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica/Starbase that I rent from SpaceX. It’s kinda awesome though,” he wrote.

He also indicated that he retains only one other property. “Only house I own is the events house in the Bay Area. If I sold it, the house would see less use, unless bought by a big family, which might happen some day.”
