Dosa – is an emotion for most South Indians that goes beyond the notions of just being a quintessential breakfast favourite. Known by many names - Dosa, Dosey Dosai, or Dosha, this crepe-like rice pancake that is commonly eaten for breakfast in South India. With the balance of carbs and proteins, this dish is made with fermented rice and lentil batter.
Believed to have originated in a city called Udupi in Karnataka, legend has it that it was invented by a cook who tried to ferment his own version of alcohol with rice. As it did not work, he just poured it out on a pan to make a crepe out of it.
Swiggy has recently come up with a report that has revealed interesting insights into India’s love for dosas based on the orders from February 2023 to February 2024. A whopping 29 million dosas were delivered by Swiggy in the year, and an average of 122 dosas delivered per minute during breakfast. The dosa capital, Bengaluru, ordered twice the number of dosas compared to Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata combined.
Interestingly, Chandigarh has made the Masala Dosa its favourite dish and dosa was among the most ordered dishes in Ranchi, Coimbatore, Pune, and Bhopal. One user from Coimbatore ordered 447 plates of dosas in the past year.
According to a release from Swiggy, “dosa was the second most ordered dish during Ramzan, cricket world cup and the IPL, and the top veg dish ordered during the Navratri season. As expected, the prime time for dosa cravings is during breakfast hours followed by dinner. Chennai shines as the city with the strongest affinity towards dosas to dinner, while Hyderabad contributed to solidifying dosa’s position as a favourite snack-time dish.”
While the Masala Dosa remains the favourite, Plain Dosa, Set Dosa, Onion Dosa, and Butter Masala Dosa have also been among the most ordered. Dishes like Chocolate Dosa, Pav Bhaji dosa, Noodles dosa, Palak Dosa, Schezwan Chop Suey Special Dosa, Dilkhush Dosa, Lays Dosa, American Chop Suey Dosa, and Dosa with Paneer are a sign that the dosa continues to whet our appetite for more.
