Lucas Ball, a YouTuber known as Pigmie, undertook a challenge to avoid sitting for an entire week, inspired by health recommendations to reduce sedentary behavior. He allowed himself to lie down for eight hours at night but remained upright for the remaining 16 hours each day.
To facilitate his work, Ball purchased a bamboo standing desk, which he found increased his productivity. He noted, "I didn't have time to take a breather and then get distracted."
However, by the third day, Ball experienced significant discomfort in his lower legs and feet, leading to fatigue and a decline in posture. He also reported increased hunger, stating, "Maybe I was hungry from burning extra calories... I constantly ate throughout the entire day."
By the fifth day, the physical toll prompted Ball to end the challenge. He observed a slouched posture in his upper back but noted a slight improvement in the curve of his lower spine.
Despite the discomfort, Ball reported some benefits, including improved digestion and a 30% increase in productivity. Reflecting on the experience, he stated, "What I think I'm gonna do from here on out is stand up, maybe like first thing when I go to work at the computer for a few hours. When I start to get fatigued, we'll bring that desk out."
Reflecting on the experience, Ball stated his intention to incorporate standing into his routine more moderately, suggesting he would stand for a few hours during work before transitioning to sitting as needed.
Health experts caution that while standing desks can offer benefits such as improved posture and focus, excessive standing may lead to fatigue and other health issues. They recommend incorporating movement breaks throughout the day to enhance circulation and reduce stiffness.
