Forget owning an Hermès bag, even a single paper envelope from the French luxury design house may be out of reach for most people. While paper envelopes are generally sold a dime a dozen, buying one from Hermès will set you back a cool $125 (or Rs 10,400 approximately).
According to the Hermès website, the “signature orange Hermès paper envelope” comes wrapped in silk and an orange paper box. Available in two sizes, A4 and A5, it is “ideal for storing travel documents, tickets, or notes.” It can also be a keepsake for “a special invitation or even a declaration of love.”
It may be all those things, but social media users felt it still did not justify the price tag.
A TikTok video making fun of Hermès’s outrageous pricing has gone viral online. The envelope was not the only product that came under the scanner – a paperweight retailing for $2,950 also shocked viewers, as did a mouse pad that sells for $405.
“How are you keeping your papers from flying away without a Hermès mushroom paperweight?” comedian Benton McClintock wondered in a funny TikTok video. The paperweight he was referring to sells for $1,350.
“We’re literally just a joke to rich people,” a person commented.
This, of course, is not the first time that luxury brands have copped backlash for their pricing. Balenciaga last year went viral for selling trash bags for Rs 1.4 lakh each.
