A hairless two-year-old bulldog named Petunia has been awarded the title of the world’s ugliest dog, securing a $5,000 (Rs 4,37,783 approx) cash prize and instant celebrity status at the long-running World’s Ugliest Dog competition in northern California.

The annual contest, held at the Sonoma–Marin Fair near San Francisco, is best known for rewarding canine quirks and unconventional looks rather than the polished perfection of traditional dog shows. While entrants are assessed in a handful of light-hearted activities, the emphasis is firmly on celebrating their unusual appearances.

Now in its fifth decade, the event also serves a wider purpose: raising funds for animal shelters and promoting the adoption of dogs in need. According to the organisers, a large proportion of the dogs who take part each year have been rescued from abusive conditions, puppy farms, or neglect.

In a statement on its website, the fair described the ethos of the contest: “Dogs of every breed and size have brought joy to our lives through their unconditional devotion. This international event honours the quirks and imperfections that make each dog unique.”

Petunia’s journey to the winner’s podium began in troubling circumstances. She was discovered by rescuers in a chaotic and unsanitary backyard breeding and hoarding situation in Las Vegas. The hairless English–French bulldog mix was later transferred to Oregon by the non-profit group Luvable Dog Rescue, where she eventually found a permanent home with owner Shannon Nyman.

One competition judge remarked on Petunia’s appearance with fond amusement: “She’s the most wrinkled two-year-old I’ve ever seen.”

Her distinctive look — a combination of folds, hairlessness, and what organisers described as “charming imperfections” — won over the judging panel and secured her the 2025 crown.

Alongside the $5,000 prize, Petunia’s victory also earned her a marketing deal: her image will feature on a limited-edition run of MUG Root Beer cans, provided by one of the contest’s sponsors.

Her newfound fame quickly reached a national audience. Shortly after the event, Petunia appeared live on NBC’s Today show alongside Nyman, where the pair discussed her rescue story and her path to victory.
