Nearly three in ten (29%) Indian drivers have admitted to texting, emailing or using social media while at the wheel, a recent survey by IPSOS, a market research company, has shown. The global average stands at 22%.
In a survey conducted across 14,160 repsondents globally, India featured among countries where a high proportion of drivers engaged in usage of mobile devices while driving. Other countries included Saudi Arabia (43%), South Africa (41%) and South Korea (33%).
Great Britain has the least number of drivers -- only 8% -- who text, email or use social media while driving.
Age is the most important factor when it comes to determining whether or not a driver will text from behind the wheel.
Those under the age of 35 (31%) are most likely to say "yes" they engage in the behavior, compared with those between 35 and 49 years (21%) and those between 50 and 64 years (10%), the survey said.
Those who are employed are more likely to engage in such behaviour as against those who are unemployed.
