The Indian film industry finds itself grappling with a disturbing trend in the form of deepfake technology with the latest victim being actor Katrina Kaif just days after Rashmika Mandanna’s altered video drew outrage. The original picture depicted Kaif engaged in a high-octane fight scene with a Hollywood stuntwoman clad in a towel in a sequence from her upcoming film “Tiger 3”.
However, the edited version that has now gone viral portrays Kaif in a low-cut white top. The deepfake has been crafted using AI tools and a recent phenomenon shows a growing trend in more such doctored content.
The online community has reacted strongly to this disconcerting development. One user expressed their disgust, stating, "Katrina Kaif's towel scene from Tiger 3 gets morphed. The deepfake picture is garnering attention, and it's really shameful. AI is a great tool, but using it to morph women is an outright criminal offense."

Just days ago, a video of actor Rashmika Mandanna entering an elevator set off a firestorm of controversy. What initially appeared as a genuine moment turned out to be a meticulously crafted deepfake, prompting a collective outcry from top actors, union ministers, and fact-check journalists.
Mandanna also expressed her concerns regarding the deepfake video that has now amassed millions of views. She wrote on X, "I feel really hurt to share this and have to talk about the deepfake video of me being spread online. Something like this is honestly, extremely scary not only for me but also for each one of us who today is vulnerable to so much harm because of how technology is being misused."

The original video actually featured Zara Patel, a British-Indian woman with a substantial following and who had originally posted the video on Instagram.
In a recent statement shared on Instagram, Patel made it clear that she had no part in the creation of the deepfake and was deeply disturbed and upset by its existence. She urged social media users to verify everything they see online before sharing it, because, as she aptly put it, "not everything on the internet is real."
Factcheck: Actor Rashmika Mandanna's viral video in lift is actually an AI deepfakeVeteran actor Amitabh Bachchan too reacted strongly against Mandanna’s deepfake and Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar also spoke out outlining the IT rules against such actions.
