Amid a stock market crash on Monday that saw investors lose Rs 16.19 lakh crore in hours, Edelweiss Mutual Funds MD and CEO Radhika Gupta emphasised the need to keep an emergency fund handy and to stay calm.

Taking to X, Gupta shared some advice that was similar to what she had offered five years ago during the Covid pandemic when the market was going through a similar turmoil. "This day. 5 years ago. When everything was red and the world looked like it would end. Keep cash (emergency fund), keep calm, and carry on," she wrote, sharing an article from the Mint where she had emphasised that the key to surviving the crash was to stay calm.

Gupta told the publication that instead of trying to predict the markets, investors should focus on getting the basics of investing right and staying liquid, she had invested a large portion of her own money in Edelweiss schemes, particularly the Edelweiss Balanced Advantage Fun.

When asked if her financial goals were affected by the crash in 2020, Gupta told Mint, "I don't believe in leverage and don't take it. My investment portfolio is totally liquid, and I am fairly relaxed."

"Asset allocation has worked really well for me in the long term -- it was a big learning from the 2008 financial crisis," she added.

Sensex crashed over 2,500 points, and Nifty hit a 10-month low on Monday as the stock market crashed following fears of a trade war initiated by US President Donald Trump's hefty tariffs. Its effects were evident by stock market collapses in Asia and Europe after China retaliated to steep US tariffs. The crash revived memories of similar market turmoil after the Covid pandemic and the last global financial crisis.
