The last day of Shardiya Navratri is upon us. The nine-day festival, which is celebrated in a grand style in India, comes to an end today. Now, the countdown for Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, has already begun. The festival that marks the victory of good over evil will be celebrated all across the country tomorrow.
It is believed that Dussehra is celebrated to sybolise the victory of Lord Ram over Ravana. In the eastern, northeastern and some northern states of India, Vijayadashami signifies the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. Every year, people burn effigies of Ravana to pay an ode to the triumph of light over darkness. People also stage various depictions of Ramayana, called “Ramlila”.
