Donald Trump is chosen by Jesus: US troops told Iran war is part of God’s plan

Questions are being raised about the language used inside parts of the United States military during briefings linked to conflict with Iran. Reports suggest that religious references may have entered official discussions, prompting concern among some service members.

A report by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) claims that several US troops were told the situation carries biblical meaning. The organisation says the remarks were made by a senior officer during a combat readiness meeting.

The MRFF, a US non-profit that works to protect religious freedom in the armed forces, published its report on 3 March. It stated that at least 200 servicemen from 50 military installations “across all the services” have raised complaints. According to the group, they allege that their “Christian zealot commanders” are increasingly framing the ongoing operation in religious terms.

The report includes testimony from an MRFF-affiliated Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO), who said he was speaking on behalf of 15 members of his unit. He alleged that during a combat readiness meeting, a US Army commander said that Donald Trump was “anointed by Jesus” and that the conflict forms part of “God’s divine plan.”

According to the complaint, the commander “specifically referenced numerous citations out of the Book of Revelation referring to Armageddon and the imminent return of Jesus Christ.” The ‘Book of Revelation’ is the last book of the Bible, which talks about Armageddon, a final battle at the end of the world, and about Jesus Christ returning to Earth soon.

“He said that 'President Trump has been anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth',” the quote added.

The NCO further alleged that the commander repeated that “President Trump has been anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth.” The complaint was first shared with independent journalist Jonathan Larsen.

MRFF president Mikey Weinstein, an Air Force veteran, criticised the alleged remarks. He said this type of language creates a “propaganda bonanza” for extremist groups such as Al-Qaeda, Islamic State and Boko Haram. He argued that it could increase tensions in Iran and the wider region.
