ND Tiwari is Rohit Shekhar's biological father: DNA report

DNA test results have revealed that senior Congress leader ND Tiwari is the biological father of 32-year-old Rohit Shekhar. The Delhi High Court on Friday gave the details of Tiwari's DNA test, which was carried out after Shekhar moved the court claiming that the Congress leader was his father.

While revealing the details of the DNA test, the court said, "ND Tiwari and Ujjwala Sharma are the biological father and mother of Rohit Shekhar."

Tiwari can now challenge the findings of the report in the Supreme Court.

Ujjwala Sharma, who is Shekhar's mother, called it a victory of the truth. "It is the victory of the truth. It is not my personal victory. "We don't expect anything from him (ND Tiwari). We are in the shelter of the court. Whatever the court decides, we will abide by it."

"I am neither happy nor sad. I will take every lawful right I have been given under law. I am not an illegitimate child. I have the right to use his (Tiwari) surname," said Shekhar.

Tiwari issued a statement which was read by his lawyer outside the court in which he called the case his personal matter. "Please do not try to look into my private life. I have been a freedom fighter. I have the right to live according to my own wishes. No one has the right to look into my private life," Tiwari said in his statement.

The Delhi High Court had on Friday dismissed Tiwari's plea seeking fresh trial and in-camera proceedings in the paternity case.

Shekhar had filed a case against Tiwari in the Delhi High Court in 2008. Tiwari approached the High Court and them the Supreme Court pleading for quashing the petition.

However, on May 24, 2012 the Supreme Court directed Tiwari to give his blood sample for the DNA test. Tiwari gave the blood sample for DNA test on May 29.

On July 20 the High Court decided to unseal the DNA report and make its contents public.

Tiwari, three-time Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, also served as Uttarakhand Chief Minister between 2002 and 2007. He held the External Affairs portfolio between 1986-87 and was also the Governor of Andhra Pradesh between 2007 and 2009.

Shekhar's mother, Ujjwala Sharma is the daughter of former MP and Minister of State Defence Sher Singh. She reportedly come in contact with Tiwari while working for the Mahila Morcha of the Congress.

Ujjwala was married to DP Sharma, but the two now live separately.
