Travel vlogger and actress Shenaz Treasury sparked controversy online after sharing a video in which she compared the rent of a spacious villa in Bali to her one-bedroom flat in Mumbai. Treasury claimed that her small apartment in the Indian financial capital cost more to rent than her friend’s luxurious villa in Indonesia.
In the video posted to her social media platforms, Treasury toured a picturesque villa in Bali belonging to her friend, highlighting the property’s private pool, expansive garden, and serene forest surroundings. “I pay more rent for my 1 BHK apartment in Mumbai than my friend pays for her villa in Bali,” she said in the clip.
Taking viewers through the lush greenery and tranquil setting, she added, “Imagine living here is much cheaper than living in Mumbai in a 1-bedroom matchbox apartment 10 minutes away from a beach like mine with the traffic and the pollution and the dug-up roads.”
Her comments, however, were met with criticism from some users on social media who accused her of regularly disparaging India. One commenter said, “Go to Bali. Mumbai and India would be happy without you. It's now and then you keep bashing India.” Another wrote, “Then go to Bali, who’s stopping you?” A third added, “With influx of people, Bali will also become expensive due to demand and supply when demand will become high. It's just a matter of time. Till then go and enjoy till it lasts.”
Treasury also outlined why many Indians were considering relocating to Bali. She noted that one of the primary attractions was the relatively low cost of living. “Transportation, meals, and massages were reasonably priced,” she said, adding that “the standard of living was also high.”
She went on to describe Bali as Indonesia’s wellness capital, offering yoga courses, healing retreats, nutritious cafés, and a host of other amenities that catered to individuals seeking relief from the stress of urban life. “It’s the ideal destination for anyone exhausted by city life,” she said.
Treasury, who has long advocated for travel and remote work lifestyles, referred to the island as a global hub for digital creators and entrepreneurs. She said Bali had become a haven for remote workers and was especially popular among those in creative and wellness industries.
Highlighting the cultural richness of the island, she added, “Bali’s Hindu roots bring a rich cultural presence with temples, rituals, and daily offerings.”
