On March 9, marking National Napping Day, US Democrats mocked US President Donald Trump for his sleepy moments at events. Posting on X, the party poke nicknamed him “Commander in Sleep.

In an X post, the Democratic Party account TheDemocrats wrote, "Big day for the Commander-in-Sleep, referring to Donald Trump. The remark quickly spread online and added political jabs about the president’s stamina and work routine.

Another Democratic aligned account, run by aides to former vice president Kamala Harris, joined the criticism.

A separate Democrat aligned account linked to aides of former vice president Kamala Harris also criticised Donald Trump. It posted an image of Trump with his eyes closed during a November meeting in the Oval Office, focusing on agreements with drugmakers Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk involving GLP 1 medications.

Images showing Trump appearing to doze off have surfaced multiple times during his second term, often giving political rivals material to criticise him. Social media users also joined in, trolling the president online.

Republicans defend Trump

Allies of Donald Trump strongly pushed back on the criticism, with Mike Johnson commending the president’s energy during a meeting of House Republicans at his gold resort in Miami.

Praising Trump, Mike Johnson called him "the most active president" he has seen. He said Trump is the most energised and successful leader of his lifetime, adding that the president’s tendency to sleep less may play a role in his productivity. "The most energised president, the most successful president, I believe, in my lifetime, and he’s proven it over and over and over. And part of it is because he doesn’t sleep, thankfully," he said.

"I get calls from him at 2 a.m. and 7 a.m., sometimes on the same day. He doesn’t require a lot of sleep, thankfully. And he is the man for the moment," he added.”
