Perplexity’s ‘Computer’ grabs attention online

A new AI tool from Perplexity AI is drawing attention across startups and tech circles after it claimed to have replaced an entire marketing technology stack worth USD 225,000 per year within just a single weekend.

The feature, called Perplexity’s “Computer,” is an AI-powered assistant designed to perform tasks on a computer autonomously. Unlike traditional chatbots that only provide answers, the tool can directly manage workflows such as monitoring dashboards, optimizing campaigns, and coordinating marketing activities across platforms.

In a post on X, the account representing the tool said the system was used to build an AI marketing agent capable of handling multiple campaign tasks automatically.

Perplexity Computer replaced USD 225K per year in marketing tools in a single weekend,” the post said. “We built an AI marketing agent that scans hourly, manages budgets, detects fatigue and coordinates campaigns end-to-end. In one test run, it made 224 micro-optimizations to our ad stack.”

What can this tool do?

A screen recording shared online demonstrated how the AI agent operates. The dashboard showed a large advertising setup involving over $8 million in ad spending spread across major platforms such as Meta, Google and TikTok. The interface tracked metrics including subscriber acquisition, customer acquisition cost trends, channel-wise performance, audience demographics and a gallery of advertising creatives used for health supplement campaigns.

The AI agent was seen navigating through different sections of the dashboard while analyzing campaign performance in real time. It evaluated advertising creatives to detect fatigue in underperforming ads and suggested changes where necessary. The system also monitored campaign budgets, scaled successful advertisements, pruned weaker ones and issued alerts about potential risks. According to the company, the AI continuously scans campaign performance every hour and coordinates advertising efforts across platforms, making adjustments far more frequently than human managers typically could.

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas said the system can directly connect to advertising platforms through their APIs, allowing it to manage campaigns automatically. He explained that once integrated with platforms like Google Ads and Meta Ads, the AI agent can run and optimize campaigns at a level of frequency that is difficult for humans to match.

The announcement quickly triggered conversations across the startup ecosystem, with many entrepreneurs debating what such automation could mean for marketing teams. Some founders suggested that tools like this could significantly lower operational costs for young companies. One user on X wrote that hiring reliable performance marketing specialists can often be challenging and expensive, arguing that an AI-driven system capable of handling campaign management could be a major advantage for bootstrapped startups. According to the user, such technology would allow founders to focus on building their core product while leaving marketing optimization to AI.
