A night of intense rainfall on Sunday has once again exposed Bengaluru's vulnerability to flooding. On Monday morning, rescue teams had to deploy boats to evacuate residents trapped in their flooded homes, starkly highlighting the city's persistent struggle with civic infrastructure during heavy downpours. The city is set to receive more rain for the next two days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a yellow alert for several areas across Karnataka, including Bengaluru.
According to Namma Karnataka Weather, the heavy rain on Sunday night was the heaviest for the year. “The big deluge last night has been the heaviest for the year. Get ready for some Traffic snarls this morning,” it wrote on X.
Visuals of waterlogged areas flooded social media with some showing citizens and officials using tractors and boats to cross inundated areas.

Manyata Tech Park resembles a lake
One of the largest IT and business hubs in the city, which is home to numerous multinational corporations and IT giants, Manyata Tech Park resembled a lake, with over two feet of water logged at entry points. The park management confirmed they were coordinating with the civic body to pump out the water, Hindustan Times reported.

Weather forecast
The IMD has predicted partly cloudy skies with one or two spells of rain or thunderstorms until May 22 in Bengaluru. Rain is also likely on May 23 and 24.
The city's IMD centre director N Puviarasu told PTI: “As per the current pattern of the cyclonic circulation, Karnataka, especially the coastal parts, will get heavy rainfall. Bengaluru is also expected to receive heavy rainfall for the next two days.”
He also warned that the weather could possibly result in temporary disruption of electricity in some areas, minor traffic snarls, and possible uprooting of weak trees and branches.

Why Bengaluru witnessing heavy showers
The heavy rainfall is reportedly caused by a mix of weather conditions, mainly due to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and a weather line running from Maharashtra to Kerala, passing through Karnataka. These combined factors led to widespread downpour across the region.
